John Milstead "Sides of the Soul," 2010

John Milstead - Sides of the Soul

Variety is the spice of life -- all you need is a guitar and a song (and a few backing musicians). Yes, there are indeed many intriguing sides of Mississippian multi-instrumentalist John Milstead’s soul. He's a rocker ("Your Crime"), a bluesy crooner ("Don't Believe In Love" -- be sure to check out JM’s neo-psychedelic solo breaks), a romantic troubadour ("Hold Me Like You Mean It"), an R & B purveyor ("Got This Love Thing"), a torch song balladeer ("Always Goodbye," "No Feeling"), and a reggae man ("Hideaway"). With a delivery that evokes iconic vocalists such as Pat Monahan (Train), Paul Rodgers, John Rzeznik (Goo Goo Dolls), and Dave Pirner (Soul Asylum) Milstead can do no wrong on "Sides"... melding pop and blues melodies atop his no nonsense guitar artistry (i.e. a simple yet refreshing blend of rhythm, supportive harmony and space). This is the stuff that made Mellancamp, Springsteen, and Petty stars... let's hope there's room for John Milstead -- he’s certainly got the goods as evidenced on SOTS.

John MilsteadSometimes you can tell where an artist is from simply by listening to their music.  That could be said of John Milstead, who hails from the state of the Mississippi.  The Tupelo native has released an album that is pretty much incredible.  In fact, the album is a little more than what you would expect from a “new” artist, as Milstead has what is called an “old soul.”

From the opening cut, “Hold Me Like You Mean It,” all the way through to the end of the album, there is not one piece of filler anywhere to be heard of on this album.  Whether he is moody and reflective, as he is on the afore-mentioned cut, or whether he struts his stuff---like on “Your Crime,” he shows that he is an artist of the first magnitude.

Probably my favorites on the disc are the ballads, where he showcases a vocal approach that is as good as any artist on pop radio today.  “Heartaches Like You” is proof of this, as is “Easy Goodbye” and the jaw-dropping “Head Over Heels.” I could write more words about Milstead, but that would prolong the amount of time that you would be without this album, and that truly would be a dis-service.  Even Simon Cowell would have no complaints!

For all of you singer/songwriters out there, you need to check out Eddies Attic in Decatur GA, just outside Atlanta. Famous for John Mayer playing his early stuff there and gathering a following, they host an open mic singer/writers night every monday night and twice a year all of the "winners" from the monday nights compete in a single elimination round. It's a great place to meet other musicians/ writers and network to get all the scoop you want about the independent music biz. Im playing at the finals this Fri night. This will be my second time to make the finals in the last year. Out of an average of 2800 singer/songwriters, about 25 go to the finals twice a year and im really excited to be a part of it again. I guess it's similar to playing BlueBird Cafe in Nashville, but to me the talent here in atlanta is FAR beyond what i have seen at the bluebird. Even on regular monday nights sometimes the singers are extremely good- It is a drive just to play a few songs but if you like to network, or if you are just a music lover, This place is always an awesome time. It's not like a regular bar-- It's all about the music, and you won't hear a cover song in this place..
